A REQUIREMENT THAT BENEFITS US
A few years ago, talking about animal welfare in Argentina was rare and even annoying in most cases. Some people said that “this is an European issue since they are having problems due to the intensive production and the confinement conditions which caused serious epidemic outbreaks in the 90’s such as the Classic Pork Pest (CPP), New Castle and mad cow disease.” There is a great chance that this statement is true, though this issue and its debate are older than those about sanitation mentioned above. Cattle producers are constantly struggling to improve their production by optimizing their sanitation management, their meadows implants, their conservation of hay and grains and their genetics to obtain the maximum meat production per hectare. However, they do not pay attention to the loss of quality in the meat due to the loading and transport of their animals to the cold-stores. That is where the most frequent mistakes that cause a high-impact in the future meat cuts happen. Year after year, the beef industry subtracts million of dollars for losses due to bruises and dark meat mostly caused by ill treatment (rudeness) in the above mentioned process. Consumers, especially those who buy our meats abroad, strongly demanded their requirements on this issue and have made possible to promulgate animal protection rules.
